The illustration above, a photo from the Florida Panhandle after a direct hit from Hurricane Michael, is by Sean McGowan, of FEMA's Region VIII (mountain west area) from a presentation made in March. McGowan's presentation is an example of the incredibly informative resources available via the Natural Hazards Center at the University of Colorado that hosts regular webinars titled "Making Mitigation Work." Information about the webinars and an archive of their programs can be found on their web page, here. Highly recommended!
Welcome to an information page focused on something to which I've dedicated my career: Planning safer communities in the face of natural, climatic, geologic and man-made hazard events--more specifically, how to keep us all "out of harm's way." The Urban Land Institute defines "Building resilience" as "identifying and investing in places and infrastructure that are the most likely to endure." That's the answer in a nutshell. I welcome your feedback!
