Next Thursday, October 19th, is the International Great ShakeOut--an event designed to focus on earthquake safety awareness. Organizations can register to participate and be counted at the ShakeOut web page, here.
As I looked at the materials presented to discuss earthquake safety, like this,
there was a ring of familiarity with the advice "Duck and Cover." It reminded me of safety talks I'd heard in elementary school in the 1960s.
I was happy that earthquake safety was receiving such attention, but I
was even happier that the life-altering reason for the "Duck and Cover"
of my childhood seemed to be less of a concern in this century. Let's
hope it stays that way!
Times change. Threats evolve. But good advice is forever.
